David L. Saunders (Age 71), died on Sunday, February 1, 2009, at his home in Chantilly, Virginia. He was a native of Charlotte, North Carolina and received bachelors and masters degrees in textile engineering from NC State University and Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively. He had a distinguished, 30-year career as an Army officer, in which he served two Viet Nam tours and was the Commanding Officer, Natick Research, Development & Engineering Center in Natick, Massachusetts. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart and additional awards throughout his military service. After retiring from the Army in 1990, he was employed by NISH, followed by a career as Vice President of Tex-Shield, Inc. until his retirement in 2007. He then formed DLS Consulting, LLC.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet Kelly Saunders; daughter, Kelly Saunders and her husband Thomas Kamm, Jr. of Washington, DC; granddaughter, Erin Kamm; step-granddaughters, Emily and Caroline Kamm; sisters, Marjorie Hudson and husband Philip of Concord, North Carolina, and Rita Arnette and her husband Tom of Graham, North Carolina; brothers, Ronald and his wife Sara Saunders of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, and Timothy and his wife Linda Saunders of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Family will receive guests at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, February 5, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Fairfax United Methodist Church, 10300 Stratford Avenue, Fairfax, Virginia on Friday, February 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the Fort Myer Chapel on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment, with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Ft. Myer Officers Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Army Quartermaster Foundation, P.O. Box A, Ft. Lee, VA 23801 or to Capital Hospice, 209 Gibson Street NW , Suite 202, Leesburg, VA 20176.
