Mary Ellen Ashe, 86, a retired Air Force Colonel who served for 23 years throughout Europe and the United States died peacefully in her sleep on March 18, 2012, after having visited throughout the day with family and friends.

Col. Ashe joined military service in 1952 – 5 years after the establishment of the US Air Force. At the time of her retirement in 1975, she was one of only five women colonels in Air Force service.

She was born in Rennselaer, NY in 1925, the oldest of the three children of Frank and Hazel (Bronk) Ashe. Her brothers, William and Matthew, predeceased her by several years. She was a graduate of St. Rose College in Albany, NY, and received a Masters in Arts from the State University of New York at Albany. Until her death, she lived in Springfield, VA for more than 35 years.

Col. Ashe will be remembered for her feisty determination, "can do" spirit, devoted friendship, and her love of family. She is survived by her nieces Catherine Blair and Ann Proctor of Harrisburg, PA, Mary Ashe-Mahr of Waynesboro, PA, Marice Ashe of Berkeley, CA, and nephews Matthew Ashe of Richmond, VT, and Brian Ashe of Mill Valley, CA, along with their spouses, children, and grandchildren. She also is survived by Dianne McHugh of Lenex, KS and Carol Lenz of Parkville, MO, daughters of Col. Jay Swearingen, USAF, and many friends and neighbors who so ably supported her throughout her life, especially in her final years.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on August 3, 2012 at 12:45 pm at the Ft. Myer's Old Post Chapel immediately followed by burial at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Capital Caring, 2900 Telestar Ct., Falls Church, VA 22042 or capitalcaring.org\donate.
